A systematic methodology to manage variation and risk in the product development project so all customer expectations are met, and so the product can be developed with minimal risk. DFSS is a subset of LPD.

Benefits
Improved Project Management & Measurement, Reduced Financial Risk, Optimized Applied Resources, Focus on Project Priorities

LPD Thought Process
The LPD thought process follows a DMAIC approach as well as fundamentals of project management. Project priorities are established based on internal and external customer needs. Scope is measured by identifying deliverables and understanding the development process by which the deliverables are created. Analysis is then performed to prioritize tasks, eliminate non-value-added tasks and add additional tasks for risk mitigation. Once the “what-to-do” is established, improvements and optimization in the planning (“how-to-do”) process are established. Finally, efficiency improvement actions and a project control plan is required to monitor the project throughout product development. Note this process emphasizes non-technical customer requirements whereby DFSS (as a subset of LPD) emphasizes technical requirements.
